Top 20 Best Selling Cars In Canada January 2015

The Hyundai Elantra began 2015 as Canadas best-selling car. January 2015 Elantra jumped 15% to a record-high for the compact Hyundai lineup.

The Elantra was Canadas second-best-selling car in the 2014 calendar year, the fourth consecutive year in which the Elantra finished second to the Honda Civic.

Civic volume slid 31% last month, and the Civic slid to third spot in the passenger car standings.

Januarys results, however, mean very little in the grand scheme of things. At no other point on the calendar will Canadians buy cars in such small numbers. Thus, not only does the Civic have eleven months to overcome the deficit, it has 11 higher-volume months in which to act. The Civic has been Canadas best-selling car in each of the last 17 years.

The Toyota Camry led all midsize cars in Canada in January 2015. The Camry lest led on an annual basis in 2012. The Honda Fit, with triple the January volume in 2015 than in 2014, led all subcompacts. The only premium brand car to crack the top 20 in January was the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada September 2014 YTD

Canadian sales of Cadillacs regular-wheelbase Escalade jumped 173% to 120 units in September 2014. GM Canada also sold 33 Escalade ESVs, a 136% year-over-year improvement.

The segment-leading Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was down 20%, but at 199 units, the GL was still easily the top pick. 

Mercedes-Benz Canadas base price for the GL is a surprisingly value-conscious $78,500, but V8-engined GLs start at $109,900. Escalade pricing begins at $79,900 with a 420-horsepower 6.2L V8 fitted as standard equipment. 

Setting the GL apart is availability of a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel powerplant with fuel consumption in the city thats 24% lower than in the GL550.

In September 2014, for the third consecutive month, the Hyundai Sonata was Canadas best-selling midsize car.

So rough was the Sonatas start to the year, before the 2015 model was introduced, that the Hyundais year-to-date pace is still off 2013s selling rate by 5%. But Sonata volume more than doubled in September, a month in which midsize car volume tumbled 6% and the Sonatas rivals combined for a 15% loss. 

Only a handful of midsize nameplates have generated more sales over the last nine months than they did during the same period in 2013, and the Sonatas not one of them. Buick Regal volume is up, but its 14.5% increase translates to just 77 extra sales. Chevrolet Malibu volume has increased 1.5%, mainly because of the third-quarters massive increases, but the increase equals just 80 extra sales. Hondas 0.5% Accord improvement equals only 63 more sales than at this time one year ago.

The Subaru Legacys 27% bump is more momentous, but its still a basement dweller in the category: sales are up by 390 units to 1849 this year, or fewer sales than the Sonata managed in July alone. Volkswagen Passat volume has improved 6% in 2014, a 361-unit increase, but Passat sales have actually decreased in each of the last two months.

Although the Escape wasnt able to outsell all its rivals in the final one-sixth of the year - the Honda CR-V was the top dog in November and December - the Escapes year-end total was 14,514 units superior to the CR-Vs. 

Think of it this way, for every CR-V sold in Canada in 2014, Ford Canada sold 1.4 Escapes.

Despite the Escapes continued position at the top of the leaderboard, the small SUV arena is a competitive one. 

All four of the top sellers reported record sales in 2014. Newer candidates like the Jeep Cherokee and Mazda CX-5 account for 12% of the categorys sales. The Volkswagen Tiguan posted sales gains for the third consecutive year, reporting record sales and year-over-year growth far in excess of the segments average.
