The segment-leading Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was down 20%, but at 199 units, the GL was still easily the top pick.

Mercedes-Benz Canadas base price for the GL is a surprisingly value-conscious $78,500, but V8-engined GLs start at $109,900. Escalade pricing begins at $79,900 with a 420-horsepower 6.2L V8 fitted as standard equipment.

Setting the GL apart is availability of a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel powerplant with fuel consumption in the city thats 24% lower than in the GL550.

2013 Chrysler 300 white

The Chevrolet Impala led all contenders with 9225 sales, and the Impalas 20% drop did not hinder Chevrolet car sales from rising 10% as the Corvette, Cruze, Malibu, and Sonic produced significant year-over-year increases. Chevrolets SS fell to its lowest full month total. The SS has been on the market since November of last year.

Ford and Chrysler sold an equal number of Taurus sedans and 300s. Dodge Charger sales slid 1%. Combined sales of the Charger and 300 totalled 13,381 units. General Motors sold 12,851 Impalas and Buick LaCrosses.

Hyundais Azera joined with the better-selling Kia Cadenza for 1867 sales. Azera sales have been tumbling all year and fell 49% in September. Cadenza volume was up 19% last month.

Large Car Sales In America January 2015

2015 Dodge charger red rear

After falling 8% in calendar year 2014 – and 17% in January 2014 – sales of the Impala-class cars tumbled 9% in January 2015. In other words, sales of these cars in January 2015 were down 24% compared with January 2013 levels.

After declines in the final four months of 2014, the anticipated 2015 Charger may have finally taken hold in the first month of 2015. With 7025 sales, Charger volume was up by 1825 units.

The leader of the pack, Chevrolets Impala, was down 23%. That decline played a role in GMs overall 7% passenger car decrease.

Large Car Sales In Canada August 2014 YTD

2012 Nissan Maxima
A host of year-over-year sales declines from a number of full-size, volume brand sedans were not overcome by big gains from a handful of nameplates in Canada during the month of August 2014.

Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger volume plummeted. Ford Tauurs sales dropped 6%. Kia Cadenza volume was down by three units, a 10% decline. Toyota Avalon sales slid 15%, a 14-unit drop.

The gains produced by the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala were nothing compared to Nissans doubling of Maxima sales.

But a doubling of sales in this category, in this country, equals very little: just 51 extra sales for Nissan dealers across Canada. For comparison, Nissan Rogue volume jumped by 1190 units in August.

With no Azera in Canada, Hyundai relies on the decidedly upmarket Genesis to push top-trim Sonata buyers way, way, way up the ladder. (GCBC also displays Genesis sedan sales in a luxury car segment breakdown.) Genesis sedan sales more than doubled last month, as well.

* Genesis refers only to the sedan, not the coupe. For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesnt yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
